Sony updates PS3 to 1.90, PSP to 3.52

The PS3 receives a far more significant update in its 1.90 firmware:
- Wallpapers. No more generic XMB background for you! Better start downloading some high-res images.
- Emoticons in messages. =D
- Support for text entry with simplified and traditional Chinese characters has been added.
- Games in the XMB can be sorted.
- Video options can be adjusted while watching a DVD/Blu-ray Disc.
- Eject a disc using the controller (but you still have to get up to pick up the disc).
- Finally: No need to plug in the controller to update.

"Eject a disc using the controller (but you still have to get up to pick up the disc)."
Didn't they have a flinging disc feature? Oh wait that was on the PSP
umm...hello?? @ Jul 24th 2007 1:29AM
...and thank goodness they got rid of the stupid "plug in controller to complete update" crap. the whole purpose being WIRELESS controllers. AND I don't have to search for the stupid cable for every update...only when I need to recharge the battery for the controller.
oh, and some nice Halo3 wallpapers just for kicks.

gee i cant wait to update my ps3 firmware so i can change wallpapers on my dashboard...god. get ur sh!t together sony. ITS A GAMING CONSOLE. YOU NEED GAMES NOT THIS BLURAY SHIT! xbox 360 / wii ftw. the more people that get Live the more people to play with, screw sony's crippled "games console"
riggs @ Jul 24th 2007 8:42AM
man....shut the fuck up. thanks.
GodisaMyth @ Jul 24th 2007 9:39AM
Maybe the should copy Microsoft and have 1/3 of the consoles cease to function after a month or 2. You would like that, would not you.
They are getting thier shit 2gether. It does take time, IF you want to make sure that these firmware updates do NOT take up to much memory AND do not (microsoft) BRICK the console.
KawF @ Jul 24th 2007 1:34AM
An undocumented nice new feature in this firmware update: you no longer need to plug in the SixAxis by USB in order to finalize the update.

Dammit! When are they going to have the PS3 put discs back in the cases itself?! This is ridiculous.
DCBlack @ Jul 24th 2007 9:55AM
It comes in handy if you have a younger sibling that you can make a "disc slave!" MWUAHAHAHAHA!
accidental @ Jul 24th 2007 2:42AM
At least they're doing SOMETHING. The Wii has many useful little changes that would be very welcome in a firmware update yet we've had nothing of the kind since launch.
James @ Jul 24th 2007 2:44AM
In know "access to the XMB during gameplay" has become some sort of Livs vs. PSN battlecry, but why do we want this again? What exactly do we need to do in the XMB while playing a game? Chat? Double-check what demos we have? I'm not seeing any compelling need...
Einhanderkiller @ Jul 24th 2007 4:25AM
It could be useful to check GameFAQs or something to read a walkthrough without having to quit out of the game. Other than that, no other use immediately comes to mind.
Jason @ Jul 24th 2007 8:45AM
Pause the game, go to the dashboard: see which friends are on live, start up a chat or invite them directly to the game/lobby/map you're playing. Check out your latest achievements and see what else you still need to complete. Change your custom music playlist from the hard drive etc. All without quitting your game and rebooting it. Nice huh?
GodisaMyth @ Jul 24th 2007 9:42AM
I do not think you will see XMB access in game simply because HOME will have it when it launches this Oct. Be patient....wait for home.

@BPM
Damn right you are! Sony is always screwing with us! It is much to ask for the damn discs to change themselves? I say NO!
Djuan @ Jul 24th 2007 2:47AM
I'll be receiving my PS3 today via UPS, so it's all about updating as soon as I get it...
Then, playing as much R:FoM as I can manage in an afternoon!
NeoPhage @ Jul 24th 2007 3:03AM
Apparently, the new update allows for full HDMI range to be enabled in a PS2 game.
Car2oon @ Jul 24th 2007 3:38AM
There might be a Ratchet and Clank demo this Thursday too!

Change PS2 upscaling option in game ftw!
aristokrat18 @ Jul 24th 2007 6:56AM
Will they never allow controller charging while in standby?
JodyAnthony @ Jul 24th 2007 8:29AM
thanks for that wallpaper site! There is some pretty kick-ass stuff on there
Matt B @ Jul 24th 2007 8:57AM
I found it pretty sweet also. :)
How about Joystiq 2.01 to allow emoticons?
Matt Smylie @ Jul 24th 2007 9:42AM
I love the way they let you set wallpapers up now.
After zooming in and moving the image around for the perfect background, I like the PS3 interface even better than the 360's now.
Vidikron @ Jul 24th 2007 9:52AM
I like that we can use wallpapers, but it's not exactly what I was hoping for. I was hoping we would be able to use PNGs with transparent backgrounds so that we could still see the wavy default background behind it. This works with the user icons,
But I tried it for the background and any part that was transparent was turned white and the wave wasn't visible.
tkane @ Jul 24th 2007 11:32AM
dont know if this was from a previous firmware but you can now access the Xmedia bar while accessing you videos or pictures or music.
Jonathon @ Jul 24th 2007 12:37PM
Anyone else get kicked off of their respective PSN games last night for the update to demand to be installed? And then afterwards I had connectivity problems from then on out, with it constantly timing out or just freezing the game entirely. It's starting to piss me off.
